Origin
Patongko is a traditional Southern Thai dish, particularly from Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces. It originated in Muslim communities that blended Indian and Malay culinary traditions. Originally prepared at home as a snack or breakfast food, it later spread throughout the country and became popular in roadside restaurants.
Characteristics and Flavor
Patongko is a thin, round pancake with an appetizing golden-yellow color from eggs and sugar. It has a sweet, rich, and savory taste, fragrant with eggs and butter. Some shops add coconut milk for a richer flavor. It tastes even better when paired with granulated sugar or fresh coconut milk.
